Steps to Take When Charged With DUI in Jackson County Municipal Court

In 2008 Jackson County formed the Jackson County Municipal Court to adjudicate general County Ordinance Violations, which include DUI tickets issued by the Jackson County Sheriff's Department. Jackson County Municipal Court dockets are held on the first and third Wednesday of the month at the Eastern Jackson County Courthouse in the Jury Room (Room 157) on the first floor of the Eastern Jackson County Courthouse in Independence, Missouri. The Jackson County Municipal Court hears cases issued under Jackson County Ordinance Violations and includes cases filed by the Jackson County Sheriff's Office . These offenses include Driving Under the Influence (DUI), Boating While Intoxicated (BWI), Possession of Drugs (Marijuana or other Controlled Substances), Possession of Paraphernalia, Trespassing, Theft or Stealing, Firearms Violations, as well as Speeding Tickets, Careless Driving violations and other traffic infractions.

Jackson County History

Jackson County was once home to the Osage Native American tribe and the earliest white explorers were European fur traders. The Lewis and Clark expedition passed through Jackson County in 1804 on their way to the Pacific. Fort Osage was the first US military outpost within the Louisiana Purchase Territory and remained open until 1822. Jackson County became part of the newly admitted State of Missouri on August 10, 1821; it is named for President Andrew Jackson. A statue of Jackson on horseback greets visitors at the entrance of the downtown Jackson County Courthouse. Our future President Harry S. Truman was the presiding judge in Jackson County at the time of the construction of the downtown courthouse in 1934 and was involved in its Art-Deco design. The old Jackson County Courthouse is now known as the Historic Truman Courthouse and is located on the Courthouse Square in Independence, Missouri. Court is no longer held there, but at the recently-refurbished courthouse at 308 W. Kansas Ave., Independence, Mo., 64050.
